Hormone Therapy
- Progestagens
Progestagens are also sex hormones but they act against oestrogens.
They may be used in the treatment of advanced breast cancer that has failed to respond to other treatments such as tamoxifen.
Side-effects are mild and include weight gain and fluid retention.
Megace is an example of this group of drugs.
The use of progestagens has substantially decreased because of the development of more effective drugs to inhibit oestrogen production – the aromatase inhibitors.
